Rob Nelson, the new Western Regional Sales Manager for Duraturn tires, surely has one of the more interesting backgrounds in the tire industry.
Not the fact that he spent decades in managing tire retail operations, although that is extremely helpful to Duraturn dealers.
Rob is a member of the Nelson family who is recognized by the Guinness World Book of Records as the only family with a #1 hit record; they actually have several - Ozzie ('35), Rick ('60& '61), Gunnar & Mathew ('91).
If you've been around for awhile (a long while!), you'll remember "The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet," a wildly popular sitcom that ran from 1952 to 1966. It starred the real-life Nelson family - Ozzie, Harriet and their sons David and Ricky.
Ozzie is Rob's uncle. Ricky, one of the top teen idols of the 50's and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, was Rob's first cousin.
Rob remembers many great times growing up with the family in and around Tenafly, NJ. "A lot of fun and talented people," said Rob, noting that Uncle Don went on to write many successful Hollywood scripts.
So how did guitar-playing Rob end up in the tire business?
"I was just out of school in 1973 and wanted to be a teacher, but there were a surplus of teachers in the market at that time. I needed a job so I got an interview with Sam Winston and the rest is history," he recalls.
What followed has been a successful career in the tire industry with a particular focus on managing retail store territories . . . for Winston Tire, Monroe Shocks/Tenneco Automotive, and Goodyear . . . to mention a few. He's also done some teaching . . . coaching to be specific in track and field.
"I believe my experience in tire retail and the industry overall is a good asset to Duraturn dealers. I look forward to working with all our customers to help them sell more tires and grow their business," Rob says.
